- The issue of technological change and its consequences for work and labour markets has attracted attention from researchers, policy-makers and in public debate. Although technological change has been a persistent aspect of the evolution of economic activity, the reasons for this attention reflect a growing body of evidence indicating that the current wave of technology is qualitatively different from previous phases of change. Driven by developments in information and communication technologies (ICT) and computer-based technologies (CBT), technological change is having a pervasive and disruptive effect on work and labour markets. Its direct effects extend from the widening application of automation, which has begun to alter patterns of job creation and destruction across industries, through to new online labour market platforms. Further indirect effects centre on business model innovations that have been facilitated by these same technologies, including a growing diversity of 'peer-to-peer' service delivery platforms. Many of the new technology-based business models have been' disruptive'; they have enabled new firms to quickly displace or undermine the market leadership of incumbent firms.
